Etna Jean Gray
Funeral services for Etna Jean Gray will be held at 2 P.M. , on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Hickory with Bro. Thomas Laird and Bro. Phillip Gandy officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 P.M. - 8 P.M. at Newton County Funeral Home – South Chapel on Saturday, November 2, 2013.
Mrs. Gray, 80 of Decatur, died Thursday, October 31, 2013 at Baptist Hospital in Jackson.
She was a native of Newton County. She graduated from Hickory High School. She attended East Central Junior College, East Mississippi Junior College, and later graduated from Delta State University. She played basketball at Hickory High, East Central, and East Mississippi, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame at East Mississippi Junior College. She taught elementary school in Meridian and Forest for 27 years. She was married to Paul Gray for almost thirty years and they made their home in Forest. After his death, she returned to her home community in Newton County. She was a lifelong dedicated member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a choir member. She had a heart for missions, both locally and abroad. She was a longtime Secretary/Treasurer for MS State Sacred Harp Singing Convention. She loved attending Sacred Harp and Christian Harmony Singings. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons: Timothy P. Gray, and his wife, Jeanine of Brandon and Tom Gray, and his wife, Pam of Apex, N.C.; one daughter: Paula Freeman of Brandon; eight grandchildren: Carlie Gray, Haley Gray, Carson Gray, Hannah Gray, Madelyn Freeman, Cate Gray, Heidi Gray, and Will Freeman; one brother: Thomas Scarborough, and his wife, Audrey of Decatur; several nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her husband: Paul Gray; parents: Sidney and Mae Wroten Scarborough; one sister: Junie McNeil; and two brothers: Durward Scarborough and Levelle Scarborough.
Pallbearers will be Sidney McNeil, Mike McNeil, Todd Stokley, Charles King, Sidney McNeil, Jr., and Daniel Steverson.
