Funeral services for Hancel Harvey Thorne will be held at 10:30 A.M. , on Monday, October 7, 2013 at Grace United Baptist Church at Decatur with Bro. Winnie McMahon and Bro. Robert Rowzee officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery at Hickory. Newton County Funeral Home – South is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M. - 4:30 P.M. at the funeral home on Sunday, October 6, 2013.

Hancel Harvey Thorne was born on October 30, 1922 in the Berry Community north of Hickory, Mississippi and died at Rush Hospital on October 3, 2013 at the age of 90. He was a 1941 graduate of Hickory High School and a 1943 graduate of East Central Junior College. Mr. Thorne served his country during World War II and was a combat veteran serving as a tank gunner in France and Germany. He was a member of the 782nd Tank Battalion Reunion Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. Mr. Thorne was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church for many years and became a charter member of Grace United Baptist Church in 2002. He was a farmer and also worked for the Mississippi Highway Department for over 35 years, retiring in 1984. He will be remembered as a faithful member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of over 66 years: Roberta Strickland Thorne of Hickory; two sons: Gary Wayne Thorne and his wife Brenda Lynn, of Hickory and Ronald Hancel Thorne and his wife Ana Rocio of Euless, Texas; three grandchildren: Jonathan Mark Thorne of Newton; David Matthew Thorne and wife, Danae, of Picayune; and Ana Maria Thorne of Euless, Texas; one great grandchild: Katelynn Lillian Thorne of Picayune; one brother: Lamar Webster Thorne of Hickory; numerous beloved nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents: Harvey and Vennie Jones Thorne; two sisters: Mavis Holt and Icie Williams; and two brothers: Marion Thorne and James Henry Thorne.

Pallbearers will be Gerald Matlock, Robby Brown, J. R. Addy, David (Shorty) Airhart, Bill Williams, and Ronnie Pickett.

Honorary Pallbearers will be his nephews.
