Mr. Parker died Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Anderson’s Hospital. He was retired from the Mississippi Army National Guard and was a member of Poplar Springs Drive United Methodist Church.
Mr. Parker had a passion for living that showed up in his involvement in many different areas. He was in many respects a military man. He spent over thirty-seven years in service to his country. He enlisted in 1949 and rose through the ranks to retire as a Colonel. During those years he served on active duty in the Korean War. He learned to fly both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft. And he became the commanding officer of the Army Aviation Support Facility in Meridian. But he will be remembered as more than a military man. That military discipline showed itself in his becoming an avid runner. At the prompting of a friend he took up running in his 60’s and never looked back. He won numerous medals and awards in the Senior Olympics. And he was an honoree in the 2004 Mississippi Ageless Heroes program. He loved “fixing things” especially at his church. He loved making wine and going dancing with his wife Bobbie.
Survivors include his wife Bobbie of Meridian; his daughter Pam Cooksey (Troy) of Humble, Texas; and his son Danny Parker (Pequita) of Hickory, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his son Hugh L. Parker; his parents Mr. Sam and Marie Parker, a brother Sam Parker Jr. and a sister Phyla Parker.
The family requests memorials be made to Poplar Springs Drive UMC.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
