Luvie Dee "Lou" Bankston

Luvie Dee "Lou" Bankston, 90 of Batesville, formerly of Newton, died Saturday, August 25, 2012 at her home in Batesville.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, August 27, 2012 at Newton County Funeral Home North Chapel with Bro. Mark Moore and Bro. William Savell officiating. Burial will be in Newton County Memorial Gardens.

Newton County Funeral Home North, 9998 Hwy. 15 North, Newton is in charge of arrangements.

Luvie Dee Bankston was born August 16, 1922 in Neshoba County, Mississippi, where she grew up as the oldest of Mr. and Mrs. Benny Smith's six children. Mrs. Bankston is a graduate of County Line School and a former member of the Golden Grove Baptist Church, now known as Enon Church. She was known to family and friends, as Lou, and she was often affectionately called "Miss Lou" by her husband.

She married William Stafford Bankston of Neshoba County in September 1942. They had two daughters: Beverly and Deloris. Mrs. Bankston was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker.

After living in Union, Mississippi until 1951, she and her family became residents of Mobile, Alabama, and Newton, Mississippi. Due to age and health conditions, she and her husband moved to Batesville, Mississippi in 2005, to live near their daughter. In Mobile, Mrs. Bankston was a member of Sage Avenue Baptist Church, and she remained a member of the First Baptist Church in Newton until death. At both churches, she served as a preschool Sunday School teacher.

Survivors include: her husband of 69 years: William Stafford Bankston of Batesville, formerly of Newton; her two daughters and their husbands: Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Ferrell of Batesville and Mr. & Mrs. John Linam of Jonesborough, TN.

She also has four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren all of whom live in Memphis, TN, and Northern Virginia.

In addition she has one suriving brother: Bobby Smith of Union and two surviving sisters: Mrs. Mazell Hicks of Vicksburg and Mrs. Imongene Hataway of Canton.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Robert Benny & Hettie Emma Musgrove Smith, one brother: Dewitt Smith of Union and an infant sister, Ima Ruth Smith.

There will be no visitation.
