Martha Sudduth

Martha Howell Sudduth, 96, passed away Monday, January 13, 2014 at St. Catherine’s Village in Madison, Missisippi. Martha Stowers Hand was born in Terry, Mississippi on May 2, 1917, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene E. Hand. She attended Hinds County Junior College and graduated from Mississippi State College for Women. After teaching home economics in Terry, she became a civilian instructor at Keesler Field in Biloxi for the Air Force Technical Command during World War II, teaching propeller mechanics to GIs. It was at Keesler Field that she met her future husband, Louis Warren Howell, and they were married October 4, 1947.

Martha and Louis spent their married life in Sherman, Texas. After the birth of their two children Martha had an active career, first working as a county extension agent, and later becoming Director of School Food Service for the Sherman Public Schools. She served in this capacity for 24 years, where she was responsible for menu planning, food purchasing, and supervision of all budgetary and operational aspects of the Sherman School Food Service. She was very active in her professional life, serving as President of the Texas School Food Service Association, and editor of their statewide publication, The Lunch Bell. Martha also took an active role in community and church activities, serving as president of the Altrusa Club and the Sherman Garden Club and completing several terms as elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church.
After her husband’s death in 1988 Martha remained in Texas. During one of her trips to Mississippi to visit family, she became reacquainted with Charles Sudduth of Jackson, whose late wife, Gladys, had been her college roommate. They began a long-distance courtship and were married August 15, 1992. Following their marriage, Martha and Charles lived in Jackson and Madison, Mississippi.

Mrs. Sudduth is survived by one son: Sonny Howell and wife Linda of Sebastopol, Mississippi; daughter Nanolyn Howell Smail and husband Virgil of Manhattan, Kansas; stepson Max Sudduth and wife Karina of Jackson, Mississippi; stepdaughter Joy Cannada and husband Donnie of Jackson, Mississippi; four grandchildren, five step grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and one step great grandchild. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother; L.C. Hand and Sister; Lillian Chapman.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Milling Funeral Home, 1484 Hwy 487, Sebastopol, MS 39359 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Graveside services for Mrs. Sudduth will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, January 24, at Cedarlawn Cemetery in Sherman, TX. Followed by a reception at the Hampton Inn.
