William D. Cochran “Mickey”

Funeral Services for Mr. William D. “Mickey” Cochran, age 87 of Livingston, will be held on Friday, January 7, 2011 at 11 A.M. from the Briggs Chapel Memorial Church with Rev. Nick Holden officiating. Burial will follow in the York City Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Cochran was born on September 29th, 1923 to William D. Cochran Sr. and Vera Coats Cochran. He graduated from Linden High School. He attended Auburn University, where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. When World War II began, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in Europe. He was one of the many brave men who stormed the beach of Normandy in France. After the Navy, Mickey then joined the National Guard. In 1963, President Kennedy called upon Alabama’s National Guard to deter Governor George Wallace and state officials from the University of Alabama. Mr. Cochran himself escorted the Deputy Attorney General, Nicholas Katzenbach to the front door of the Foster Auditorium so two students could register for classes. After serving his country for 38 years, he retired as Sergeant Major and then retired from Alabama Power Company after 38 years. He was a passionate Christian who took pleasure in singing hymns at Briggs Chapel Memorial Church. He enjoyed playing golf, and he was an avid Auburn fan. More importantly Mickey loved being with his family, where he was known as papa and daddy.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Almeria Cochran, first wife, Peggy Davies Cochran, second wife Jackie Truelove Cochran, three daughters, Patricia C. Wilborn, Sandra C. Coats, and Ginger Cochran.

Survivors include his daughter Linda C. Grimes (Sammy) of Fayette, AL; sister Alyce C. Hartzell (Roy) of Linden, AL; brother Ellis Cochran (Sue) of Gallion, AL; 4 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandson, 4 step children, Ernie Truelove (Deborah) of York, AL; Debra Dial of Boyd, AL; Danny Truelove (Sharon) of Cuba, AL; Vivian Walden (Tommy) of Boyd, AL; 8 grandchildren, 7 step great grandchildren.

Honorary: Sam Massengill, Murray Rew, Bobby D. Ezell, Members of Briggs Chapel Church.

Bumpers Funeral Home of York will be in charge of arrangements.
