Mrs. Mae Cathel McKenzie Bridges
Services for Mae Cathel McKenzie Bridges will be held Monday, December 9,1:00pm at First Union Missionary Baptist Church in Meridian with Rev. Melvin Hendricks, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Berry and Gardner Funeral Home entrusted with the arrangements.
Mae transitioned on December 3, at Rush Foundation Hospital. She was eighty-seven (87) years old. She was born March 16, 1925 in Barnett, Mississippi to Gilbert and Jurisha Barnett McKenzie. She was one of five children. Her parents, two sisters, Christine and Kolie Kire, one brother, Gaython, preceded her in death.
"Mae Katherine" as she was sometimes called received her education in the Jasper County School System. She also attended McMurphy Beauty School where she graduated and became a certified Cosmetologist.
She married the love of her life Howard Bridges, Sr. in 1948 and to this union three children were born. Her husband and one step-son Howard Bridges, Jr. also preceded her in death.
"Big Mama" loved to cook! She was an experienced cook. She worked twenty-eight (28) years for the Meridian Public School System as a cafeteria cook. She also chaired the Kitchen Committee at her church. Her meals and dishes were always special and tasty because she prepared each with a special ingredient, Love.
Mae was very family oriented. She dedicated and committed her life to her family, but also to her extended family, church family, community family and her neighborhood family.
She was a member of First Union Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School; and served as Vice-President of the Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Council of Organizations XYZ Club.
Serving as Active Pallbearers: Darius Ewing, Greg Husband, Richard Kelly, Augustus McKenzie, Bedell McKenzie, Gaython McKenzie, Jr., and JaWeldon Short.
Honorary Pallbearers include: Dr. Alvin Fielder, Jr., Johnny Harris, Edward Johnson, Robert Markham, Dewain McSwain, and Douglas Scott.
Survivors include her sons, Albert Gilbert, Earnest Charles and his wife "Tasha"; daughter, Yvonne Jurisha; grandchildren, Zerian, Brandon and his wife Daphne, and Danielle Marika; great granddaughter, Danielle Elaine; sister, Dorothy Husband; aunt, Dora Lee Barnett; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, December 8, from 4.-5 p.m. and one hour before the service on Monday at First Union.
