Services for Patricia J. Smith will be held Thursday, May 8, 2014, at 11:00 am. at First Presbyterian Church, located at 911 23rd Avenue, Meridian, Mississippi with Dr. Rhett Payne officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Robert Barham Family Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Patricia Joiner Smith, 80 years old, of Meridian passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her husband and children on Sunday, May 4, 2014. She was lovingly known as Mama, Maw, MawMaw, MeMaw, Trish, Aunt Tish, and Pat by so many.
Patricia served the Lord for 35 years at Jones Memorial Presbyterian Church, and then moved to First Presbyterian Church in 2002. She loved her work in the Women’s Ministries, Children’s Ministries and Circle of Friends. Serving with children and Circle of Friends was her joy. She was active in the Suqualena Community Development Club, being named Lauderdale County’s Woman of the Year.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Everett (Ed) Smith; son, Steve Smith and his wife Brenda; daughter, Luann Burns; daughter, Susan Young and her husband Ricky; daughter, Amy Gibbs and her husband, Stephen; grandchildren, Chad Smith and his wife Jennifer; Michael Smith and his wife, Angel; Melissa Roberts and her husband, Charlie; Holly Barbee; Natalie Saez Matthews and her husband, Josh; Lauren Saez Riemer; Matt Young and his wife Monica; Josh Young; Sarah Gibbs; Matthew Gibbs; Anna Gibbs and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roy M. Joiner, Sr.; mother, Myrtle Tidwell Joiner; stepmother Marie Barrett Joiner; one brother, Roy Joiner, Jr. and his wife Deloris. Three sisters also preceded her, Mildred Peavy and husband Ardell; Flora Rimmer and husband Jimmy; Betty Sanderford and husband Carl, Jr. and their son, her nephew, Sandy Sanderford.
Pallbearers are the grandsons and nephews of Mrs. Smith: Chad and Michael Smith; Matthew Gibbs; Josh and Matthew Young; Johnny Rimmer; Butch Peavey; Gary Joiner and Todd Sanderford. Honorary pallbearers are the Deacons and Elders of First Presbyterian Church, and family friend Jerome Hearn.
The family extends expressions of love and thanks to the caregivers, including the employees of Hospice Compassus, and to Ms. Peggy Reed and Ms. Ella Abernathy, without whose love and compassion this journey would have been much more difficult.
