William Martin Hand, 86 of Newton, MS, died Wednesday,May 4, 2011 at Pioneer Community Hospital in Newton, MS.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM, on Friday, May 6, 2011 at Newton County Funeral Home North in Newton,MS with Dr. Brian Rushing and Dr. Frank Harmon officiating. Burial will be in Lawrence Cemetery, Lawrence, MS. Newton County Funeral Home North, Hwy 15 North, Newton, MS is in charge of arrangements 601-635-3200.
Mr. Hand was born in Newton County, grew up in Lawrence, MS. He attended the Lawrence school and then Newton High School. He is a U.S. Marines Veteran serving during WWII in the South Pacific and Alaska. He was employed by the United Gas Pipline Company and retired after 32 years. He served as a the Commander of the American Legion Post #89 of Newton County for 15 years. He accepted Christ as his Saviour at Lawrence Baptist Church where he served as deacon and Sunday School Director. He later was a deacon and faithful member of First Baptist Church, Newton, MS. Mr. Bill will remembered as an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, water sports and camping, especially with his family.
Preceded in death by: Parents: Robert Louis and Eunice Parker Hand; brothers: Bob Hand and Sam Hand; sisters: Jessie Dominico, Doris Mazuricyk, Becky Sims,and Frances Hand.
Survivors Include: Wife of 67 years: Ona Johnson Hand, Newton, MS; Children: Tim Hand,(Annette) Brandon, MS,Deborah Hand Lewis,(Bruce, Terry, MS, Polly Hand Lindsley,(Danny), Newton, MS and Jeffery Hand, Brandon, MS; sisters: Bonnie Pace and Eunice Peoples; grandchildren: Paul Hand (Melinda), Christi Hand Busby (Dusty), Amy Lewis Mata (Michael), Michael Lindsley, Shelly Lindsley Ward (Jason), Reagan Lewis (Jessica)and Kady Hand; and 7 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers: Bob Bridges , Charles Godwin, Ples Hester, Thomas Humphreys, Benny Nelson , John West . Honorary Pallbearers: Berean Sunday School Class
In Lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Men’s Ministry of First Baptist Church or Gideon’s International.
