Melanie S. S. Thornton
YORK, Ala. – Graveside services for Melanie Sue “Lanie” Springfield Thornton will be held Sunday, at 3 p.m., at Clay Memorial Cemetery in Cuba, Ala., with Rev. Leon Ballard and Rev. John Evangelista officiating. Bumpers Funeral Home of York is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Thornton, 47, of Meridian, died Thursday, April 7, 2011, at Bedford Care Center. She was a 1982 graduate of Sumter Academy and a 2007 graduate of Meridian Community College where she received her CNA certificate. She was employed at Oaks Rehabilitation Center where she loved her co-workers and patients. Through the years, she enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. Lanie enjoyed shopping, eating out, long afternoons at Dalewood by the lake, riding in Jeeps and fishing. Lanie loved life and she lived it to the fullest. She overcame breast cancer in 2002 and went on to be an active member for Relay for Life. In 2010, cancer came back in a different form. She has put up a strong fight for the past year to be a survivor, but the Lord decided it was time for her to come Home. She never lost her faith or gave up. Her sweet smile will always be remembered by those who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her high school sweetheart, love of her life and husband of 25 years, Stanley Thornton of Meridian; sons: Hunter Thornton and Michael Thornton, both of Meridian; mother and step-father: Barbara Newell and Rufus Newell of York, Ala.; father and step-mother: Everett Springfield and Mary Jean Springfield of York, Ala.; brother, Michael Springfield and his wife Liz of York, Ala.; twin sister, Melinda Coffman and her husband Darrin of Meridian; sisters: Melissa Acton and her husband Robert of Meridian, Jennifer Goodwin and her husband E.W. Goodwin of Lauderdale, Diane Ward of Springfield, Mo., Brenda Lovell and her husband Reed of Franklin, Tenn., and Donna Dial and her husband Jim of Livingston, Ala; sisters-in-law: Becky Phillips Davis and Robin Phillips Day, both of Cuba, Ala; mother-in-law, Sue Sorrell of Raleigh; sisters-in-law: Jen Thornton and Beth Thornton, both of Raleigh; brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Story of Cuba, Ala.; mother-in-law, Retha Thornton; and, numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents: Mr. and Mrs. Walter Springfield of Gordo, Ala., and Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Webb of Cuba, Ala.; father-in-law, Jimmy Thornton of Cuba, Ala.; and, father-in-law, Don Sorrell of Raleigh.
Pallbearers will be La’Dale Cockrell, Jeff Acton, Jonathan Waltman, Davey Massey, Chance Tucker and Justin Coffman.
The family would like to say a special “Thank You” to the staff of Rush Foundation Hospital, Meridian Oncology, Internal Medicine Clinic and Infinity Hospice.
Visitation will be today, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Bumpers Funeral Home in York, Ala.
