Republican congressional candidate Charlie Ross was invited to speak to the Meridian Kiwanis Club Wednesday.

Ross said Meridian is important to the outcome of his Apr. 1 run-off with opponent, Gregg Harper, who also said earlier he will also spend a great deal of time in Meridian.

Ross urged people to make their government better by voting. He said the key difference between himself and harper is experience.

"Sonny Montgomery is legitimately a legend here. He had 10 years in the legislature. I have 10 years in the Senate. He had an extensive military and guard background. I do, too. Our backgrounds are similar," Ross said. "He got things done. I got things done in the legislature. That's why I ask people to vote for me. We need somebody who can hit the ground running."

Ross said he spoke earlier to retired National Guard officers at Key Field, and has campaign events Thursday and Monday in Meridian. He said it is the hub of the eastern part of the third district.
