Alabama Democrat, Cong. Artur Davis, is recommending that former governor, Don Siegelman, avoid testifying before Congress about his corruption case.

Davis, a former federal prosecutor, said that Republicans would use the occasion to try to embarrass Siegelman by rehashing unflattering details from his trial. In a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Davis also said the testimony could jeopardize Siegelman's appeal.

Last week, Conyers said the committee wants to bring Siegelman to Washington to testify about the case as part of a broader congressional investigation into allegations of Republican political influence at the Justice Department.

After serving nine months in federal prison, Siegelman was released Friday while his 2006 conviction on bribery and obstruction of justice charges is on appeal.
