Cong. Artur Davis, a key surrogate for Barack Obama's presidential campaign, has been tapped to deliver a nominating speech for the candidate at the Democratic National Convention.

Davis' spokeswoman said the congressman will speak for several minutes Wednesday afternoon at the Pepsi Center to formally place Obama's name in nomination. The other nominating speakers had not been named.

Davis, a former Harvard law classmate of Obama's, chaired Obama's campaign in Alabama and was one of his earliest supporters in the presidential race.
Davis represents Alabama's seventh congressional district, which includes west Alabama.
