Court records show two news organizations are asking for access to pre-sentencing letters written on behalf of former Hinds County Circuit Judge Bobby DeLaughter.
DeLaughter is set to be sentenced Nov. 13 in Aberdeen for lying to FBI agents about whether he improperly influenced a case.
DeLaughter was snared in the same judicial bribery investigation that toppled famed tort attorney Richard "Dickie" Scruggs.
The courts have granted access to letters written on behalf of Scruggs and others convicted in the investigation.
Such letters generally are written by people who know a defendant and often ask for either leniency or a lengthy sentence.
A judge did not immediately rule on the requests by The Clarion-Ledger and the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal.
