Decreased sales tax revenues are leaving Mississippi's education system about $9.2 million short, meaning leaner budgets for the upcoming school year as deficits are passed forward.

K-12 schools will need to make up about $6 million, universities are looking at a $2 million shortfall, and junior and community colleges are about $1.2 million short.

All were supposed to receive the money during the 2007-08 school year.

The largest school districts in the state will have to make up the most money. Jackson Public Schools will lose $348,000 in Mississippi Adequate Education Program funds and $13,000 in school supply money.
