Coach Carter is his name, but his game is much more than basketball.
Ken Carter, the basis for the 2004 movie, "Coach Carter," starring Samuel L. Jackson, made a stop at Newton High School Friday. He's promoting the importance of achieving on and off the court.
Originally from Fernwood, Miss., near McComb, Carter attracted a lot of attention when he locked out his undefeated high school basketball team in Richmond, California, in order to get them to improve their grades.
Although he's no longer coaching there, Carter says he'd do it again.
"Punishment lasts you one hour, one day, one week. But discipline will last you a lifetime. I try to discipline kids," Carter said.
"We want to get a good start for the school year. Get them motivated," said Newton superintendent Mary Kate Garvin. "Get them headed in the right direction."
