A job guarantee bill for nearly 3,000 Alabama schoolteachers won approval Wednesday from a state Senate committee.

The Senate Finance and Taxation-Education Committee voted unanimously for the bill that is part of Gov. Bob Riley's legislative package.

The legislation would guarantee city and county school systems that they will get the same number of state-funded teachers for the 2003-2004 school year as they had for the 2002-2003 school year, unless they have a decline in enrollment.

The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration. Teacher lobbyist Paul Hubbert said his support of Governor Riley's tax package depends on the bill passing.
