The idea of having consistent uniforms is a great one. The idea that a great deal of parents that have to purchase these uniforms were not really envolved in the decisions bother me. I heard some complain that kids are not wearing the right colors. Let the parents in on what is actually required. Pants without pockets would be a problem. Were are our kids going to keep house keys and lunch money. Some little girls keep personal items in their pockets because little mischevious boys go in their purses. Point being, parents should be envolved in the process of uniform decisions because we have to make the purchases and we are the ones responsible for our children adhearing to the dress code.
I am concerned that MPSD is not understanding the importance of being consistant. I heard someone say this week that consideration was being given to the elementary students having the option of whether they wear a belt or not. If the clothes have belt loops then they should wear a belt. This is part of the problem with this district. They need to be consistant from k-12. Students need to learn to follow and obey rules.
Most of us are career teachers and have devoted our entire life to the education of children. Many have retired and have come back to help these children. Please do not make comments like "teachers are in it for a check." There are many jobs we could have had that paid much more without the stress. Also, many teachers reach into their own pockets to supply children who are in need with clothing, classroom and school supplies. Most teachers work many more hours than an 8 hour job each week. When you leave you still have hours of work at home after taking care of our own families grading papers, recording grades and even talking with parents. The job does not end there, if you see parents while grocery shopping, eating out, shopping or at church you are often involved in talking with parents. Also, many teachers attend sporting events in order to show support to students during the school year.
CENTRAL OFFICE are you hearing the needs of your teachers in your district? Support and improve your district before you lose more of your best teachers. Improve the discipline policy and make sure the students follow the dress code. Teachers should not have to deal with this every day. Teachers should be given a safe working environment it is the law!
Do you work for free? Why is it said that teachers are just there for the check? In order to teach, you must have a college degree. Why waste money going to college if you are just in it for a check? There are plenty of jobs were no degree is needed. Please stop looking for teachers to work for free.
Kids are not being harrassed by teachers! Teachers are working hard to keep these out of control children from (bullying)harrassing their peers and talking disrespectfully to all adults. If you try to call the student's parents for help either they have given the wrong phone number so you cannot reach them or the parent talks to the teacher like the child does. TEACHERS are not the enemy they are trying to teach all of these children. The task is getting harder and harder when you spend more time with children and parents who have major behavioral issues. Something needs to be done to help all teachers with the children who have major behavioral issues. I have also had some of these parents come to observe their child and then you have another disruptive child to deal with in the classroom and have to call someone from the office to remove the parent. Office referrals are not working. If you write the student up, they come back and continue to repeat the same behaviors.
Give Loretta a break....She is right on a couple of things. A lot of teachers are just there for a check, and want our children strung out on meds so they will sit there like little zombies. As for the uniforms, the thing is, if parents monitored what their children wear it would not have come to uniforms. Pants sagging below the waist and shirts so low cut you see it all. And yes, some teachers do harass some kids, and yes I have seen it. It is our job to raise out children right, but it is the schools job to teach and keep our children safe!!
When uniforms were 1st implemented by MPSD I thought it was a great idea; however, I now find it all quite amusing. For example, last month I was on school campus for awards day. As students filed into the auditorium over half of them were in violation of dress code. Students were wearing everything from pink & gray shirts, to pants that exposed almost the entire buttock as school staff & administrators looked the other way. When I inquired about this I was told the reason the school can't enforce the policy is because parents won't purchase the correct items & if students are sent home it will count against the school's year end grade level score due to lack of attendance. It is quite evident we cannot enforce the uniform policy due to fear of our school level score dropping so I can't help question why we even have uniforms? Furthermore, if pink and gray are the "new white" I can only imagine the varying shades of blue we'll see in the 2010-2011 school year.
Loretta, I think that you are just jealous of the young teachers. What are your degrees? Do you work? Please note that it is your job to RAISE your kids, not the older good teachers. Cameras, 24/7 guards, cops, etc.. wouldn't be needed if children were being raised at home. How do you know that kids are being harassed? Do you visit the classrooms?
Loretta have you heard of dress for success? The idea is for students to be focused on learning, not on what everyone is wearing or who can try to break the dress code. It is not a style show!!!
what do uniform have to do with student's learning??? will it help my kids make All A's on their report card? I dont think so! focus on major things Mr. Kent like getting camera's all around the schoolS, hiring securityguard 24/7 year round, and hire some older good teachers like I had when I were coming up as a child.we have too many childlish teachers in the school system nowadays and the only thing some of them do is harrass the kids..they alway said two head are better than one,but only if you thinking with the right one
Amen to MHS teacher on June 17 at 10:51 it is time that someone ENFORCE the rules on the dress code. Their needs to be consistency. Uniform means everyone is dressed alike. Students should tuck their shirts before they leave home and keep them tucked until they return home. This should not have to be dealt with daily at school in every class. This becomes a disruption and takes up valuable instruction time. Belts should be a specific color and type and should be put on and not left at home or put in the bookbag to take out when asked why they didn't put their belt on that morning. Shoes are to be velcroed or tied and should not have to be addressed everyday. Oversized beltbuckles, jewelry, scarves and sunglasses on the head have also become a major problem. On the hand we have large rings and in the hand we have wooden brushes, combs, and picks either plastic points or metal points that are being carried. Please understand these are used to hit or poke. These should be consided as weapons.
Can't the board agree on anything??? I guess the handbook will remain just as ambiguous, too; they need to start making a stand and stand on it!! Get rid of your bogus administrators, tighten the discipline policy and the dress code; and stop shredding the referals; and please, do the right thing and get rid of the principal out of her element and unable to follow policy and get rid of the teacher who thinks it is more important to cheat and have her kids do well than to teach them right from wrong and the basics of English; really GOOD teachers do not need to cheat to succeed.
The uniform serves the same purpose as it does in the military; why don't our soldiers get to wear whatever color they choose to wear? If you do not make the students conform in every way you will never get control of the discipline problems. Our discipline problems were much worse this year and coincidentally they were more lax on the dress code; they could wear ANY school color under their polo shirts; it opened up a can of worms and a lot of buttons; the girsl put flowers, see through, whatever under their polo shirts and made sure you could see as much as they could reveal; the colors looked like clown school; the boys still sagged and wore white t-shirts. The dress code needs to be tightened and enforced. If the parents want their kids educated, they should want them clothed properly; they buy new clothes, shoes, etc. every year; 2-3 blue polo shirts is not going to be that expensive; maybe Wesley will have some for the true needy children; most have everything else they want..
If PARENTS would dress their kids properly in the first place, policies like this wouldn't be necessary. There was an incident at a school in the area last year with girls wearing very inappropriate and revealing clothing to a school function and nothing was done. Requiring uniforms would fix that problem very quickly. After all, if the parents won't make their kids dress properly then the schools have no choice but do. You reap what you sow. It's a shame that the innocent ones have to suffer for the inept parenting of a few. Lesson learned: Life isn't fair. Deal with it.
