Meredith Wilson Wins National Merit Scholarship

A Meridian student is among 21 statewide who have been named National Merit scholarship winners.

Meridian High School's Meredith Wilson will attend the University of Mississippi.

College officials chose the winners from program finalists planning to attend their respective institutions.

The award amounts are between $500 and $2,000 per year for up to four years of undergraduate study.

Wilson was the only Meridian student to receive this category of award as a National Merit finalist.

I remember seeing video of Henk when the TV station did a story on him. He's also a good soccer player. These students are outstanding. They've been on TV and will now not be scarred emotionally for life, mama, auntie and whoever. Good grief!

Mr. Henk Both, a 2009 graduate of Meridian High School, also received a college-sponsored, National Merit Scholarship from the University of Alabama. He will be attending this university in the fall. This was announced in May, 2009. Congratulations, Henk!!

The National Merit program issues scholarships in several categories, announced at different times of the year. This category involved finalists chosen by the universities the students plan to attend. There were about 8,200 finalists this year. From those a number of National Merit $2500 scholarships are awarded. There are also separate categories of corporate-sponsored scholarships and college-sponsored scholarships awarded to finalists. This award was in the college-sponsored category. More information about this is available by clicking the link below. We hope this is helpful in further explaining this story. Jess Waltman is certainly an outstanding student and it's why WTOK was pleased to present him an all-scholastic team scholarship, with our partnering sponsor Rick Justice Automotive.

This is wonderful for Miss Wilson, but, this report is not fully correct. Mr. Jess Waltman, another local student from Quitman, also recieved this honor and scholarship. He will also be attending the University of Mississippi as part of the Honors Program there. Please report this also, as I think Mr. Waltman deserves the same story that Miss Wilson was given, they are both wonderfully smart and talented young scholars, and deserve proper reporting, not just partial. Thank you.
