State school superintendent Dr. Henry Johnson Wednesday recognized 12 schools for their efforts to "close the gap'' in educational achievement.
Witherspoon Elementary in Meridian, Newton Elementary and Bay Springs Elementary were included in that group.
Each school will receive $5,000 for progress in closing the performance gap between black and white students over two years.
Johnson said the schools are examples of where every school in Mississippi needs to be.
