The first day of school for Meridian and Lauderdale County Thursday means that buses will again be transporting children. Safety officials are working to make 2002-2003 an accident-free year.
Drivers for the Meridian Public School District attended a last safety meeting before the beginning of the school year. Officials say it's the most important responsibility the district has.
Transportation Director Jayson Chisolm urged all drivers to be extra careful because buses will be rolling, shortly after 6:00 a.m. Thursday.
"Use extra caution when students are loading and unloading, because this is the most dangerous zone," said Chisolm.
School safety director Dr. Sam Thompson said parents and guardians can also help keep the kids safe.
"Keeping students from getting to the bus stop too early can help protect them from predators," said Thompson. "And we welcome parents to call us and work with us in making bus stops and schools safer."
