Two Students Expelled over Gun Incident

The Meridian School Board voted Tuesday night to expel two students who allegedly had a gun or knowledge of a gun on campus at Meridian High School.

17-year-old high Kmondrae Daevon Curry was charged by police as an adult for possession of a weapon on campus Oct. 19. The other student still has juvenile status. His name was not released by authorities.

The board voted to expel both teens through the end of the current school year.

School superintendent Charlie Kent said both would be considered for re-enrollment next year, including the possibility of attending the alternative school and a GED program.

Police say the charge against Curry will be presented to the Lauderdale County grand jury in March.

Give me a break: Are you serious with that post? It shows an incredibly artificial understanding of how our society works. And saying that you have African American friends that agree with you doesn't make it non-racist. It saddens me that this type of mentality still exists. It only exacerbates the underlying problems that cause things like the subject of this news story.

The behavior starts at home. What needs to be done is that parents need to be made accountable for what their children do. Fine these parents put them in jail or something. If God and discipline had not been taken out of schools they would not be in the shape they are in now.

Please do not make this a race issue. Some white students do drugs and have weapons and don't get caught. AA's as you call African Americans are not the only ones that have multiple babies by multiple men. That is such a racist statement. Why can't you just state that something needs to be done to correct the wrongness in society and in the community without making it a racial issue? African Americans are not the only ethnic group that has rotten apples. Every ethnic group has some rotten apples. Oh, are there only African Americans in jail? You need a reality check! Who said the fourth grade chid was African American? Do you know about the situation? You must be a racist to assume that the child is African American! Margaret, from what I hear West Lauderdale is not all that it is promoted to be. You all think you have a private school, just like some of the teachers at a city school. There are the same problems at some of the county schools as in the city... they are just hidden well!

Margaret, It isnt Vicky Hood fault these kids bringing guns to school. She did her job by calling the police and Give me a break, you sound beyond stupidity. I actually feel sorry for you. I known many white kids smoking weed out in the parking lot at school, because their parents allow them to do it at home.Your comment holds no merit.

I definetly agree that there are some idiots running our schools. However, if a 4th grade student brought those pills to school the parents should be punished. I am sick and tired of these parents not raising their kids. I have lots of AA friends who are sick and tired of the way this large group of AA's are living. They are taking handouts, having multiple babies by multiple men, taking drugs, exposing their children to dangerous things, watching parents either in jail or not working, stealing and abusing the system. We as a society and the educators who actually care aboutt these kids need to demand that the school district allow us to do our job and put the kids first. Even if it means offending the parents.

The students having guns at Meridian High School is not the only problem MHS has. Why don't we start with administration and teaching faculty? MHS at one point in time had a pretty good reputation---now, it is a joke. Sure am glad all my children went to and graduated from the Lauderdale County School System--and West Lauderdale in particular.

There shouldn't be any tolerance of weapons, drugs, or anything of this magnitude allowed on any campus. Yesterday, my niece came home to tell my sister that a fourth grader at her elementary school bought some pills and some powder to school. She said the teacher sent the boy to the office and the principal sent the boy back to class. What was his punishment? The boy came in the room telling the teacher how the principal is not going to do anything to him because she likes him. He said that the principal said that the teachers and students should stop lying on him. If that lady is upholding that boy in bringing pills or whatever to school, she should be fired. She just lets those kids do whatever they want at the school. My sister said when she visits the school children are running around everywhere and the principal just jokes with them. If she can't do her job why is she there? This is the same person who was at another school and it was out of control.
