A study of science and social studies got hands-on for children at Oakland Heights Elementary School.

Teachers decided to immerse students in the study of biomes. They did this by creating different climates and habitats in the hallway, using art and creativity.

Oakland Heights teacher Lisa Shumaker's room is at the end of the biome hallway.

"I have enjoyed watching the children of all different grades come through our hall because they fan when they come through the hot desert," said Shumaker. "They swim when they come through the ocean. And just they experience these different climates and biomes. And it's just fun to watch."

"These are biomes our children do not normally get to see," said third grade teacher Dottie Rigdon. "They're exposed to mostly deciduous forests which is what we have here in Mississippi. Therefore, these biomes were chosen because they are unique. The children don't normally see these animals and we wanted to expose them."

Students studied and created a desert, wetland, Arctic tundra, ocean and rain forest.
