Schools Have New 'Accountability' Ratings

The Mississippi Department of Education Monday released the new ratings for schools and districts under a new accountability ratings system that has been two years in the making.

Officials said the new accountability model was needed to align with the State Board of Education's goals and a new, more rigorous curriculum implemented two years ago by the State Board.

Under the new accountability model, schools and districts will receive labels from highest to lowest: Star, High Performing, Successful, Academic Watch, Low Performing, At-Risk of Failing and Failing.

In this first year of the new standard, four percent of schools received the highest rating of Star School and 17 percent of schools reached the next highest rating of High Performing. Both Star and High Performing schools are performing above the national average.

Schools at the next level of rating, Successful, are performing anywhere from just below the Mississippi average to about the national average, 27 percent of schools reached the Successful level.

"We are no longer comparing Mississippi students to Mississippi students as the old accountability model measured," said interim state superintendent Dr. John Jordan. "If our children are competing against other children in the country, then the playing field to compete needs to be level. Now, with a more rigorous curriculum and assessment to match, our kids will be able to compete in this global economy."

Ratings are based on achievement, academic growth or improvement and the graduation rate for schools with graduates. Achievement is measured by the Quality of Distribution Index (QDI). The minimum QDI is zero and
the maximum is 300. The state's QDI is 149. Growth, on the other
hand, is based on whether students demonstrate performance equal to or better than expected based on how they performed the previous school year.

At the other end of the spectrum 26 percent of schools received a rating of At-Risk of Failing or Failing.

"The public should not be surprised that with the implementation of new standards and a new accountability system that the ratings of schools and districts look quite a bit different. That is to be expected," said Jordan. "This new model also shows that we have a lot of work to do to take Mississippi's education system to the next level and continuously reach and exceed the national average. Doing this will take a tremendous effort from administrators, teachers, parents, local communities and most importantly our students. I am extremely confident that our students and educators will rise to the challenge."

    math teacher you said all i was saying.. but the trouble is NEA or what ever they call it here.. screwed up like all the states.. have cant take control and deal with a problem when it has godlike powers and tells all that it knows better and leaves in a system they has only brought it more money ... Fact a system that has good grades and students that hold 3.5 or better dont make money the system that fails more government money you tell me what is better for the pockets of all involved... the system is corrupt like most gov. system.. Ie ACORN all the officials that are protecting it now.. making laws that doesn't exist for common man... NEA school boards all the same all gov. controlled and linked... btw math teacher a few out of school help in other states have been shut down by the NEA.. union due to not having a 4yr degree and used that to stop home schooling. before any say am full of it do the research its there

    Just because people are living in poverty doesn't mean they don't value education. They honestly don't know what type of value to give it. I know this from personal experience. I am a teacher in MPSD and I know what its like to WANT to go to school and learn, but CAN'T because all you can think about is the chaos that's going on at home. Its not the children's fault. What we've got to do is stop trying to give our students eight classes a day, and give more focused time to Language Arts and Math. Right now on the secondary level, students have 50 min a day (a little over 4 hours a week)for each class. Research tells us that this is simply NOT enough time. Just think about those kids who don't have resources outside of school. Some of our student's parents can't read or write proficiently. That's where we need to start. Eduacation involves the entire community. We need to come together and stop blaming each other. We should ALL be held accountable too.

    To What: HAHA..you BE an idiot! I do, however, agree with you that Jane is wrong about her comments. Lee, yes the data has been reviewed and reviewed. The only thing worng with the school system is the clientele MPSD is trying to educate. I love all of the students, but they come from a mindset that does not value education. The only way to help our schools is to clean up our community. Stop paying the parents to stay home, reproduce and not raise their children. It is time the taxpaying citizens unite before they keep reproducing and we are outnumbered...wait maybe we already are?

    im a parent of kids at poplar springs maybe teachers from other schools need to attend classes there to help them be better teachers and we can't blame kent becuz mps has never been all star schools we need to also look at what the county schools are doing to help improve our schools also we need to encourage failing schools students parents and teachers to do better by rewarding them with something also maybe someone needs to sit in and make sure teachers are teaching

    To Jane How do you suppose the teachers that were moved to Poplar Springs were not top teachers? You are only looking at skin color you bigot! Are you saying you don't want a black teacher teaching your child? Don't assume that skin color matters as a teacher! It doesn't!!! Some of Poplar Springs staff is prejudice and you must be a prejudice parent!

    oh boy kids are in school long enough.. to have this after hours wont help .. one kids will not use it .. another thing NEA will buck it because they are not "NEA certified" .....more money that we dont have great idea.. to enforce what isnt working..

    Has anyone dug into the data? What is the Teacher to student ratio at each school listed? What is the funding/dollars to student ratio? What is the attendance % for students / for teachers / how many days do the students have subs? Which schools use labs or hands on teaching? How many of the elementary classes have teachers helpers or assistants, what effect does that have on the test scores? The ratings alone is not enough, what are the factors in place the could drive the scores?

    To Jan: There is a way to get kids caring about school. It requires something called work, patience and caring. If a child actually believes you care they will make the effort. Unfortunately some people who are truly willing to work with these kids that have lost motivation, work themselves and cannot go to the schools and work with them. What would be helpful if there was a center that was open after five o'clock so we could work with them. WTOK if there are such centers please do a story on them. Some of us are empty nesters and have the time (after five) and resources, but not a place to go. I would like to do more than 30 minutes, but that is all the time I have doing the work day.

    oki this is were this is at.. parents cant do it because the way they where taught wasnt right ( blind teaching the blind to see colour) the standards have been dropped since the 70's 40yrs of dumb down education failure of this system.. as far as blame it all falls on the system it has taken the role of who what were why and how a child should learn see do .. from, main teaching of bad skills to sex education to how a child should be in his/ her social life.. so all that taken on by the system on its own and if parents do get involved they tell them but out you tell me were the blame is.. what was taught in schools long ago is now gone from honor , ethics and self reliance... to i am owed i be a slave to a paycheck.... and ends justify the means, honor is a personal view point ... but remember this is lest a compete generation that is the parents that were taught the same thing.. cant expect them to do anything different they where taught

    It is not only the responsibility of the teachers...it is ultimately the responsibility of the parents. I agree with some of the other comments that if the parents would pay a little more attention to their childrens education for their future and a little less time letting them run around Meridian with their friends, and on Facebook and texting...your children could be attending at least a "successful" rated school. Me personally, everyday my kids get home from school, I first ask them what did you learn in school today, then we sit down as a family and they do their homework and I am there to help them if needed. Maybe a few more parents should take that initiative!
