East Kemper Elementary Considered for Closure

The Kemper County School District is considering a proposal to consolidate its elementary schools as a cost-saving measure.

The district says it has had to cut its budget drastically because of falling tax collections.

A proposal on the table is closing East Kemper Elementary School in Scooba and consolidating it with West Kemper Elementary in DeKalb.

K-5 students from the eastern part of the county would be bused to West Kemper. Sixth grade students would be transferred to the junior high hall at Kemper County High School in DeKalb.

The district says it's in danger of running a deficit of $755,000 for the 2010-2011 school year, which would mean a takeover by the state. KCSD says it's likely that drastic action will be needed to avoid that.

The district says consolidation would mean cutting approximately six teacher positions and possibly other positions, saving the district an estimated $400,000.

Do you think closing East Kemper Elementary School is the best option for saving money for Kemper County School District?

(CONT'D) that don't care about how their children are raised either. But back to the education--Public School education has been messed up since they took the pray out of the schools as well as disipline. When the teachers are afraid of the children as well as the parents how in the world can they have control and be able to teach? If they could get past teaching the "State Test" and go back to teaching the basics and give our children the educations they need and deserve then we might be able to have the leaders of tomorrow instead of "test takers". Our children really do want an education and not just to be able to "pass the test". We need more teachers like "Young Black Lady" that truly care and are not there for a pay check. So if they do consolidate the elementary schools, maybe it will be for improvements. We do need to come together and try to make a differnce in our community and stop bashing and blaming each other.

As I look over these post today and see all the strong opinions, I can't help but notice that no one has a name. There are over 100 postings and only 5 people with names. I do not feel that is a black/white issue with the school district in Kemper County. I transfered to Kemper County High in my Junior year of high school and it was unbelievable! I could not get over how far behind they were from the school that I came from. There were very few teachers that seemed to actually care. I decided then that if I was still in Kemper County when I had children that they would not attend Kemper County school system unless there had been a drastic improvement, which I have not seen. To "Young Black Lady"--there is nothing wrong with your opinion! If you want what you think is best for your child then I am proud of you! And you still want to do good for other children then ever better for you! We need more mothers like you on both sides, because believe me there are plenty of white moms

Hey check this out. State school superintendent W.T.Markham said the only way out of the present school crisis would be "constructive school legislation of a permanent nature." Many schools had closed or faced closing because of a LACK OF FUNDS. Consolidation had been carried out in some parts of the state but many districts were RELUCTANT to consolidate because of the sentiment attached to their home districts. Some method of school support would be needed other than district property taxes. This article can be found in the 1935 Hutch Newspaper (www.hutchnews.com/Localregional/yesterday-3-7--2). So you see there is nothing new under the sun. CAN WE GET PASS THIS AND MOVE FORWARD AS A TEAM?

To KA Parents and Supporters: Let's stop with the racial remarks and assumptions. Every parent regardless if they are black, white, rich or poor want the best for their child. Also, there are white parents sitting at home all day nursing a COLT 45, taking drugs or doing nothing at all. I believe one of the biggest drug bust in KC was white. I hate to burst your bubble, but I know for a fact that there are some whites who do not pay property taxes or federal taxes, Why, because they are unemploy and do not owe land. I worked with a white person who is honest and has informed me that there are whites on Welfare, receiving foodstamps, and getting medicare/medicade, and government checks. Also, they have informed me that KA education is no "better" than the public school. Remember there are some "white KA parents" teaching at KCSD. What does that tell you? Now, let's get real and stop being ugly. GET RID OF THE RACE CARD!! NO ONE CAN WIN WHEN THEY PULL THAT CARD.

To ALA - you need to stop trying to make this issue personal. Each individual in KCSD has a purpose for their position. The retired police officer (JJ) works very hard each and everyday. Cutting his job will not put on the table the money that is needed to satisfy the state. Let me ask you a question -- isn't Sumter County merging 2 high schools? You need to pay more attention to what is going on in Sumter and leave Kemper alone. Now, if you just happen to work for KCSD, my question to you is; "what is wrong with you?" -- why Alabama didn't hire you?

Listen to your selves, your fussing and going on about the poor education at Kemper schools, yet blaming others who chose not to send there children there. Why? Can we not want good things and good educations for our children also? And FYI every white person I know in Kemper Co pays Taxes. (And KA gets none of the tax money for the school)
