East Kemper Elementary Considered for Closure

The Kemper County School District is considering a proposal to consolidate its elementary schools as a cost-saving measure.

The district says it has had to cut its budget drastically because of falling tax collections.

A proposal on the table is closing East Kemper Elementary School in Scooba and consolidating it with West Kemper Elementary in DeKalb.

K-5 students from the eastern part of the county would be bused to West Kemper. Sixth grade students would be transferred to the junior high hall at Kemper County High School in DeKalb.

The district says it's in danger of running a deficit of $755,000 for the 2010-2011 school year, which would mean a takeover by the state. KCSD says it's likely that drastic action will be needed to avoid that.

The district says consolidation would mean cutting approximately six teacher positions and possibly other positions, saving the district an estimated $400,000.

Do you think closing East Kemper Elementary School is the best option for saving money for Kemper County School District?
