Common Core Education Opposition Expected

Jackson, Miss. Opponents of the Common Core academic standards will bring their fight to the Mississippi Legislature in 2014, but it's far from certain they will succeed in getting Mississippi to pull out.

The standards, adopted by Mississippi and 44 other states, are an effort to standardize what American students learn and encourage more analytical thinking. Opponents have been alarmed by federal support, and say the standards boil down to an intrusive federal takeover of Mississippi's schools.

House and Senate education committee chairmen say they could support an effort to put Gov. Phil Bryant's recent executive order banning federal intrusion into law, but say they oppose any effort to roll back Mississippi's adoption of the standards. They're also standing by Mississippi's participation in a multi-state group that's writing tests for Common Core.
