Education has been front and center at the state capitol during the first few weeks of the Mississippi legislature.
Senator Terry C. Burton tells Newscenter 11 that early childhood education is one element that is missing in Mississippi schools. Burton says funding for K-12 education is already an issue, which only complicates matters. Senator Burton says lawmakers do have a plan in mind though.
"So, that we can continue to prepare children for kindergarten," Burton says. "Prepare those kindergarteners for the elementary school and then have a college ready student when they leave the high school setting. So, it's all part of the overall educational component in the state. "
Senator Burton serves District 31, which is made up of Lauderdale, Newton, and Scott counties.
