'Fatal Vision' Program Has Message for Teens

Sumter County District Court sponsors a program to show young people why it's dangerous to drink and drive. This is done every year prior to prom season.

Organizers used visuals to get their point across that driving under the influence or riding with someone who is DUI can negatively impact your life forever.

The court this year involved agencies that have to respond to vehicle crashes and deal with the victims. The demonstration was to communicate what not to do.

"When the children are talked to before the prom, to get the idea into them, even the passengers, that look, you want to pay attention to the driver," said Sumter
County District Judge Tammy Montgomery. "You don't want to entrust your life to this person that may be ingesting alcohol, that may be smoking a narcotic, that makes them not aware of their surroundings to the degree that they can successfully operate a vehicle."

Montgomery encouraged parents and guardians to have a talk with their teenagers about the issue of drinking and driving. She says young people want you to care and be involved.
