The carousel horse project in Meridian started in 2001. The effort was created to generate money for Hope Village for Children.

Another beautifully adorned horse Friday joined the 71 that have already been placed around Lauderdale County.

West Lauderdale Elementary's front lawn is the latest location. "Knight Rider" is symbolic of the school's mascot, the Knights.

"There are many different talented artists that have painted them to represent many different projects and organizations," said Gordon Stewart, human resources director for Hope Village.

The horse's artist, Teresa Davis, is also a third grade teacher at West Lauderdale, so coming up with a school theme was no problem.

"I just really enjoy the beginning of school and all the new school supplies are always so fresh and clean," said Davis. "So I thought, what represents a school better than the crayons, and the rulers, and the notebooks?"

Davis began painting Knight Rider last Thanksgiving. Starting with the hooves, which are the erasers to his pencil legs. The saddle is lined with a ruler design and the seat is notebook paper. His tail, a paintbrush. And his teeth even have an adolescent pair of braces. But there is a little something more to Knight Rider, something almost hidden.

"There is a breast cancer awareness ribbon," said Davis. "We have had several dear teacher friends that have battled breast cancer here at school and I also lost my sister to breast cancer in 2009."

One teacher who noticed the special tribute was breast cancer survivor, Sheila Scott.

"Breast cancer was a gift to me, and I know that sounds very strange," said Scott. "But it brought many good things into my life. One of the things, in relation to the horse, is that I have such a wonderful community of supporters. They have been marvelous and that is just such a blessing."

So the 72nd carousel horse is special not only for the money donated to Hope Village, but in uniting an entire school.
