Local Resident Found It Pays to Discover

A local woman and Southeast Lauderdale High School were awarded $25,000 each Monday.

Lauderdale County resident, Darlene Harrison, was all smiles Monday morning as she and Southeast Lauderdale High, the public school of her choice, each received their portion from the Discover Everyday Giveaway sweepstakes. She won by paying for $35 worth of gas at Sam's Club, using her Discover credit card.

With the school prize component, Discover is helping schools who are affected by cutbacks.

"The schools, especially during this type of economy with the cutbacks we've seen in education, have really shown that they need this money and have put this money to good use," said Matt Towson, senior manager of community affairs for Discover.

Because of her work with the Civitan Club, Harrison has requested part of the money be used in the special education department. Twenty-five thousand dollars will enable to school to be able to help them, and every other student on campus.

"By her request, we're going to spend some in the special education department with our special needs students," said Dwane Taylor, principal of Southeast High School. "And I think we have a free hand to do. I would personally would like to do something that will benefit all of our kids here, and the instant fact is this amount of money is really enough that we can do some good in several areas. It will be used wisely."

As for Harrison's own $25,000, she plans on saving it.

"Sock it away for a rainy day," said Harrison. "It's a little bit too early to make any plans because it hasn't really sunk in yet. But we'll put it to good use."
