MSU to Offer Three-Year Degrees

Mississippi State University is joining the ranks of schools nationwide saying students can earn degrees in three years.

Starting this fall, the school will lay out paths for students who want to speed up their time to graduation. It's also altering scholarships to ensure they will support the path

Unlike some schools, MSU is not cutting the number of credit hours required to earn a degree, instead saying students should study in the summers to accelerate graduation.

That means students would save a year's worth of living expenses, but may not save much on tuition.

Critics of three-year degree programs say they benefit only a sliver of motivated and well-prepared students. But Mississippi State University Provost Jerry Gilbert says that at least for such students, they will have an option.
