The Newton Police Department is still trying to find the suspect who fired ten shots in the parking lot at half-time of the Scott Central vs. Newton football game. One person was injured.

Newton High School officials say rumors were flying after the shooting that occurred a few feet away from the school's home bleachers. Luckily, no one in the stadium was hurt and the shooting had nothing to do with the game, students, or staff.

"It didn't involve any of our students, so our response is to make sure it doesn't happen again, and that none of our kids are put in danger," said Larry Gressett, Newton School district public relations.

School officials met early Monday to discuss new safety measures.

"We are looking at a way to limit access, increase lighting, and increase security," Gressett said,

The grassy field which serves as the football field's parking lot is located adjacent to a county road. School officials now plan to enclose the entire field in a chain-link fence. They say they hope steps like these will help increase security.

"It is a huge area. You could not hire enough security to patrol the entire area," said superintendent, Dr. Virginia Young. "So that is why we are considering fencing in the entire area."

To add insult to injury, the game was intended to be a celebration for Breast Cancer Awareness. The school had raised $2,200 for research and an awards ceremony took place on the field just before the incident.

"We wanted the community to know we are concerned about things outside of school. We were extremely excited to have raised that much money," Young said.

The school hopes the heightened security will allow fans to focus on games and school celebrations and that they will never again be interrupted by such a dangerous disruption.

If you have information about the shooting, you may report it to the Newton County Sheriff's Department at 601-635-2101.
