The University of Mississippi plans an $8 million expansion of its Honors College.

John Samonds, associate dean of the honors college, tells the Oxford Eagle that the enrollment has more than doubled since the program began in 1997 with 128 students. It now has 312 students with an expected 350 students next year.

Samonds says office space will be converted into larger, more-flexible classrooms and study space. He says the project will also fix ADA accessibility issues by reconfiguring the elevator and will move the administration offices so the staff will be consolidated in one area, Samonds said. Mechanical renovations for energy efficiency may also be part of the plan.

Plans are to begin construction in summer 2013. Construction costs are budgeted at a little more than $3 million.
