Several staff members of West Lauderdale Elementary School gathered at Okatibbee Lake for a special cause Tuesday morning.
Kennedy Gunter, a first grade student at West Lauderdale, has a form of blood cancer.
The staff participated in a 5K walk to raise awareness in hopes that a cure is found.
Letitia Banks, a gifted teacher at the school, says it's important for the community to stand behind students.
"These families go through a lot and they need to know that the community is supporting them," said Banks. "And also, our school wants to show people that we work as a team to support the people in our community."
So far, over $3,000 has been raised for Kennedy.
If you would like to make a donation, an account has been set up in Kennedy Gunter's name at The Citizens Bank in Meridian.
The walk was also held in remembrance of former teacher, Sherryl Boatner.
