A new walking trail has been completed at Southeast Middle School.
Principal Marcus Irby says the 1/4 mile addition was built first and foremost for students. But he says it's also available to the staff and community after school hours, until the campus gates are locked.
"Eventually we hope to have some exercise stations spaced around at intervals," said Irby.
Irby says county supervisors Kyle Rutledge of District 5 and Wayman Newell of District 2 were instrumental in getting the approximately $18,000 trail constructed.
"District 2 doesn't have a county school in the district, so I've helped Northeast with paving the softball parking lot," said Newell. "And I wanted to be involved in helping pave this walk around for the kids down at Southeast."
Irby says the trail is an option for PE classes, and students' distances can be measured now.
