Students to Begin Subject Area Testing

Subject area testing begins for Mississippi students Wednesday.

The exams are designed to find out how well the students at particular schools are learning the material.

It's especially important at places like Meridian High School, where administrators and teachers are trying to turn things around after several down years.

MHS leaders say they're ready to put students' hard work to the test.

This is the first year for principal, Victor Hubbard, and he says he's already very proud of his students' dedication to improvement.

"We have just encouraged the children to do what you have been taught to do," said Hubbard. "And that is to make sure that, number one, you have confidence in yourself. Because if you go without confidence, that is already a strike."

Students will sit for tests Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and next Tuesday.

The schedule for testing:
Wednesday - English II
Thursday - Algebra I
U.S. History - Friday
Biology I - Tuesday

It is a shame that subject area test squash the creativity of our PROFESSIONAL educators. It is not the teacher's fault!! The state and federal governments mandates what is taught! (not to mention cutting the schools budgets EVERY year!!) Why do people expect more from schools while their monies are being cut every year?? Why would anyone want to teach in Mississippi since the teachers here barely elude the federal poverty level?? GET REAl and use your vote for change!!!

If a teacher is not allowed to teach what they want to then they are not professionals. Do you really want to look back at your career and say "Man I really did a good job teaching that test material?" What a wasted career and a waste of a life.

No, we don't get to teach what we want to anymore. All we get to teach is the TEST. Our yearly curriculum is completely centered around the TEST.

I like how that one girl said "All we do is study for the test".... Shows how messed up our education system is... Do teachers ever teach what they want to anymore?
