Teachers Using Everyday Objects to Teach

Meridian, Mississippi 25 teachers from Meridian, Lauderdale County, and Clarke County have spent the last week at Meridian High at a camp presented by the American Society for Materials.

The math and science teachers have been learning how to take everyday objects they readily have on hand at home and school and use them in experiments to provide their students with more hands-on learning. ASM master teacher Todd Bolenbaugh says that high school students are the ones who will ultimately benefit from this camp.

"It helps them think a lot better," Bolenbaugh says. "It gives them problem-solving and inquiry skills that are going to be important for the jobs that are going to be available in the 21st century."

ASM puts on about 35 camps around the country each summer for teachers, this one was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research.
