A fifth grade student at Winston Academy, Dev Jaiswal, has won the Mississippi Spelling Bee.
Jaiswal spelled the championship word 'mordacious', given to biting or caustic, in the 30th round. He advances to the 85th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
The runner-up is Desiree Roby, a 5th grade student from Christian Home Educators Connection in Hinds County. Desiree was eliminated in Round 29 with the word 'immiserization', a making or becoming miserable.
The Mississippi Spelling Bee was broadcast live on Mississippi Public Broadcasting, which will air the bee again. Check your local listings for the exact date and time.
Twenty-seven students from across Mississippi competed for the spelling title.
