Time now to introduce our latest addition to the 2012 All Scholastic Sports Team. This week's student athlete suffered a season-ending injury on the court but the senior continues to excel in the classroom.

Panther Phillip Martin may be in a brace but he's not slowing down. Martin tore his ACL in tennis practice before the season started, canceling his time on the court. He remains a section leader on Quitman's marching band which he's been a member of for four years.

Phillip Martin: "That helps a lot because that makes you have to think about a lot of different things, at the same time. Where are you going? How, when you need to get there. What are you playing while you're getting there? So that helps academics because you have to learn how to think about a lot of things real fast."

Martin's fast thinking on the field translates in the classroom. He's first in his class and he's involved in the National Honor Society, BETA club and math team.

Joette Smith, Chemistry Teacher - Quitman: "I can always depend on him to answer questions and I can depend on him to show other students if they're having difficulty and just most anything I need, I need done, I can count on Phillip. He's a very good leader and other students look up to him for that."

Martin plans on attending Jones County Junior College next year, where he hopes to join JCJC's band and study engineering. His tennis coach says, no matter what he does, he'll be successful.

Donna Evans, Tennis Coach - Quitman: "If I talk to him ten years down the road, he's going... Whatever he chooses to do, he's probably going to be the top in his field."

Quitman's math team will compete in the Math Club Convention next week. Martin and his teammates are set to take area tests against teams from other schools.
