A motivational tool by Mississippi State Coach Sylvester Croom helped an underachiever reach his best game of the season for the second straight week.
This time it was wide receiver Tony Burks who caught Croom's ire. He was demoted to second team before Saturday's 33-to-21 loss to No. 20 Tennessee.
Croom says Burks played his best game of the year.
Burks had 79 yards receiving and a dazzling 38-yard touchdown catch that showed his speed.
A week earlier Croom demoted running back Anthony Dixon, who responded with 152 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
Burks wasn't the only wide receiver with a strong game against Tennessee. Jamayel Smith caught Wes Carroll's other touchdown pass and finished with 70 yards.
Both he and Burks had five catches and benefited from the emergence of Carroll, a true freshman who threw for 203 yards in the game.
