Prattville's top-ranked Lions (7-0) won their 22nd straight game last Thursday night at Cramton Bowl beating Lee-Montgomerty 52-6.
Things get much tougher this week as 10th-ranked Stanhope Elmore (7-0) steps in as the next Lions opponent. The Mustangs make their season debut in the Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 6A state rankings this week, and they will tested quickly. Prattville is nationally ranked in at least four national polls and has not lost since the 2005 season.
Last week, running back Justin Albert was spectacular running back punts. His 40-yarder set up his own 1-yard TD run and his 60-yarder went the full distance for a touchdown.
Few Top 10 contests highlight this week's prep slate. None are listed in 5A although, McAdory (7-0), which moved up to second behind Briarwood Christian (7-0), faces tough Shelby County (5-2) in a key Region 3 battle at Columbiana. The Jackets have yielded only 19 points all season and their 2.7 PPG leads the state in scoring defense.
In Class 4A, seventh-ranked East Limestone (6-1) travels to Gurley to face the newest entry into the 4A Top 10, tenth-ranked and unbeaten Madison County (7-0). Second-ranked Central-Tuscaloosa (7-0) also faces a stiff challenge from unranked Oak Grove (6-1).
In Class 3A, the much anticipated Colbert Heights vs. Colbert County battle at Leighton Friday night pits the sixth-ranked Indians (6-1) and seventh-ranked Wildcats led by the state's leading passer Jeremy Yates. Ninth-ranked Plainview (6-1) also hosts West End of Walnut Grove (6-1).
In Class 2A, newcomer to the rankings Cottonwood (7-0), ranked ninth this week after knocking off Houston Academy last week, goes to fifth-ranked Wicksburg (7-0) in a battle of Wiregrass unbeatens. Seven-ranked Addison (6-1) is also at eighth-ranked Red Bay (7-0).
In Class 1A, ninth-ranked Florala (6-1) hosts fifth-ranked Brantley (6-1).
And in the AISA, top-ranked Bessemer Academy (8-0) puts its 21-game winning streak at risk at home against Tuscaloosa Academy Thursday night. Seventh-ranked Fort Dale Academy (6-2) is also at home against eighth-ranked Cottage Hill Christian (7-1). The AISA has just two weeks remaining in its regular season and the AHSAA has three weeks the next two, however, concluding region play.
Also remaining No. 1 this week in their respective classes are Class 1A Sweet Water (6-0), Class 2A Fyffe (7-0), Class 3A Pike County (7-0) and Class 4A North Jackson (7-0).
One game not affecting the rankings but an interesting battle nonetheless, has winless Shades Mountain Christian meeting R.C. Hatch at Uniontown. The two teams have yielded 726 points combined this season with the Eagles from Hoover allowing a state high 58.0 PPG and the Bobcats, 45.7.
The state's top offense currently belongs to AISA's second-ranked Southern Academy (7-0), which drubbed Jackson Academy 84-0 last week. The Cougars are averaging 53.9 PPG. The AHSAA leader is Class 1A Sweet Water with 53.0 PPG, followed by Class 1A Linden (50.1) and Class 4A Central-Tuscaloosa (50.0). Cordova tops Class 3A with 49.1 PPG. Other classification scoring leaders are 2A Fyffe (47.7); 5A Ft. Payne (45.1); and 6A Prattville (42.4). Top defenses behind state leader McAdory include 6A McGill-Toolen (4.4 PPG); 4A Madison County (7.4); 3A Clarke County (5.7); 2A Sand Rock (6.7); 1A Marengo (5.7); and AISA Southern Academy (4.1).
