Jay Peck rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown to lead Alabama State to a 20-16 win over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday.
The Delta Devils (2-8) set the tone of the game early with a fumble on the opening kickoff. The Hornets (5-5) took possession on their own 30-yard line and Rahmod Traylor scored after a four-play drive.
Peck scored from five yards out on the Hornets next possession. The Devils answered when Ryan Burciaga connected with Cameron Russ for a 45-yard scoring pass.
Valley seemed poised to score again in the final seconds of the half, but Brandon Averett blocked a field goal, picked up the loose ball and sprinted 69 yards for a touchdown.
The Devils forced three turnovers in the game and were hoping for a morale-boosting win, but the offense could not keep up the pace.
