Despite reports out of South Carolina, Tyrone Nix has not been offered the Southern Miss job.
Nix, a former Golden Eagles linebacker and defensive coordinator is a strong candidate to replace Jeff Bower, who was forced to resign on Monday.
Currently, Nix is the defensive coordinator at South Carolina.
"It's difficult to predict when we will name a coach, "Southern Miss athletic director Richard Giannini said. "I am working real hard to get everything ready and organized. I've been talking to a lot of people about the job. I am amazed to the number of people who are interested in the job, but no one has been interviewed at this point."
Nix spent 10 years on the Southern Miss staff under Bower and helped produce 12 All-Conference USA selections, four C-USA Defensive Players of the Year and six All-Americans.
In 2003, the Nix-led Southern Miss defense ranked No. 5 in the nation in pass defense.
Television station WIS in Columbia, S.C., reported today that Nix had been offered the job, citing an unnamed source.
