Mississippi State assistant Ellis Johnson interviewed today for the Georgia Tech defensive coordinator's job.
Johnson had been a candidate for the coordinator's job at South Carolina vacated when former Southern Miss assistant Tyrone Nix moved to Mississippi and coach Houston Nutt's staff, but Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier hired Atlanta Falcons linebackers coach Brian VanGorder today.
Ellis Johnson said he has known new Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson for 27 years, dating back to their time in the Southern Conference together. Ellis Johnson said he didn't want to compare the jobs, but said it's a hectic time of year for assistant coaches.
He said the experience is like being on a "merry-go-round." Coach Sylvester Croom said he hoped to keep Johnson and any other coach on his staff looking at other jobs. He called maintaining the staff his "No. 1 priority this offseason."
