Wommack Hired as Defensive Coordinator at Georgia Tech

Mississippi State's Ellis Johnson interviewed for the position Wednesday, but Georgia Tech decided to hire Southern Miss linebackers coach Dave Wommack as its defensive coordinator.

Jeff Bower made the announcement in a press conference earlier at Legion Field. The Golden Eagles are in Birmingham preparing for Saturday's PapaJohns.com Bowl.

Wommack, who coached seven years at USM unitl 2000, returned to the Golden Eagles staff this season after a brief tenure at South Carolina. Midway through the 2007 season, Wommack began serving as the defensive co-coordinator after Jay Hopson was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Coach Bower, whose resignation from Southern Miss effective after Saturday's game, announced that two of his players will not participate in the bowl game due to academic ineligibility. He did not give names for the young men, but did say that they would not be with the team in Birmingham.
