Jarvis Varnado scored 13 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds as Mississippi State defeated LSU 61-39 Wednesday in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.

Jamont Gordon added 13 points and Barry Stewart had 11 for Mississippi State (10-5), which never trailed.

The Bulldogs held LSU to 21 percent shooting (14-of-66) from the field and also blocked 10 Tigers shots.

Marcus Thornton led LSU (7-8) with 12 points, while Anthony Randolph had 10.

Mississippi State led 25-19 at the half and increased its margin to 14 points in the first eight minutes.

A three-point play by Randolph on LSU's first possession left the Bulldogs ahead by just three points. Mississippi State then went on a 13-2 run and never looked back.
