The University of West Alabama baseball team picked up the series win over #2 Columbus State by turning back the Cougars (0-2), 7-2, on Saturday afternoon at Tartt Field.
UWA (2-0) plated two runs in the fourth inning to capture a 2-1 lead. Jake DeRoy, who hit a one out double, scored on a Rob Dahlberg double to left center. Dalhberg advanced to third on an error by the CSU second baseman and then scored on a fielder's choice by Todd Rea.
The Red and White added another run in the sixth inning, as Dahlberg hit his second double of the game, this time to right field, scoring Jeremy Finney.
CSU picked up its second run in the seventh inning, as Aaron Beasley ground out to second base, but plated Thomas Morrison.
UWA added four insurance runs in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, Rea singled to the right side, scoring Dahlberg and Finney. Matt Busbee followed with a single to the left side to score Nick Wheeler. The final Tiger run would come on a bases loaded, Clint Moody walk to score Jeremy Dorrance, who was pinch running for Busbee.
Brandon Dill (1-0) received the win on the hill for the Tigers, throwing six innings with two runs allowed on four hits. Dill fanned four in the contest. Charley Kelley pitched two innings on the afternoon with no runs and no hits allowed, as Cole Thornton pitched the final inning of the game, fanning one.
CSU starter Anthony Arrington (0-1) received the loss with six innings of action on the mound. Arrington allowed three runs on three hits, while picking up three strikeouts.
CSU once again struck first in the contest, as Brian Gordon scored on a fielder's choice by Beasley in the second inning.
West Alabama returns to action on Sunday, February 3, as the Tigers look to close out the series with a sweep. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. The game can be followed via live stats at athletics.uwa.edu.
