Three consecutive singles in the ninth inning leads the University of West Alabama baseball team to a sweep of Second-ranked Columbus State on Sunday afternoon at Tartt Field. The 5-4 victory secures the first three-game sweep since 2007, when the Tigers (3-0) took three from West Georgia on April 28th and 29th.
Jake DeRoy led off the ninth inning with a single up the middle. Rob Dahlberg followed with a single to the right side. Nick Wheeler placed a single through the left side to score DeRoy and give the Red and White the victory.
Cole Thornton (1-0) received the win on the mound, entering in the ninth inning and fanning Brad Bowen. Along with Thornton, five Tigers saw action on the hill. Starter Matt Hill pitched five innings, allowing two runs on six hits while fanning three. Brian Burgess, Josh Varner and Josh Turner each pitched an inning with Clint Smith throwing the two-thirds of an inning.
After a Kevin Deese homerun to right field in the eighth inning gave UWA a 4-3 lead, a Jonnie Geiger one out, single to right center knotted the game at 4-all, as Aaron Beasley scored from third base.
For the third time in the series, CSU struck first, this time in the second inning, as Thomas Morrison scored on a Brandon Masters’ foul, flyout to the left side.
UWA tied the contest in the bottom of the second as Wheeler scored on a Matt Busbee single up the middle. The Tigers grabbed the lead in the third inning as Dahlberg doubled down the left field line to score Jeremy Finney.
The Cougars answered in the fifth inning on a Jonnie Geiger single up the middle, scoring Cole Martin from second base. CSU then grabbed the lead in the sixth inning on a Rodney Rutherford homerun to left field, his second of the series.
