Mississippi State Director of Athletics Greg Byrne announced Tuesday that the 2009 Bulldog football team will open its season Saturday, Sept. 5, against Jackson State University.
The historic match-up between Mississippi State, a member of the Southeastern Conference, and in-state opponent Jackson State, a Division I-AA member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, will be each school’s season opener. It will be the first football meeting ever between SEC and SWAC institutions, and the first meeting ever between one of the state’s SEC schools and any of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
The MSU-JSU match-up gives the Bulldogs seven home games in 2009. To accommodate the schedule alteration, the ’09 Louisiana Tech home game has been moved to 2012 to ensure seven home games that season as well.
Dates are subject to change and game times will be released at a later date following the announcement of the SEC’s pre-season television schedule.
