'Cats Claim State Championship

Meridian snapped the nation's longest winning streak, beating South Panola 26-20 in overtime Friday to win the Class 5A state championship.

The Tigers (13-1) entered on an 89-game winning streak and had won the state's last five championships before losing to the Wildcats (13-1).

James Barnett scored from 2 yards out on Meridian's overtime possession. Then Jacoby Eason sacked South Panola quarterback David Renfroe on fourth down from the 21 to end the Tigers' streak.

I have followed this team all year and heard many negative comments from non wildcats and to all those who said they couldn't do it wipe the tears from your eyes because MHS beat the once was undefeated Tigers. I am so proud to be a Meridianette. Congatulations, I feel like a proud parent right now.

I made it home in time to see the second half of this game on TV. Way to go, Wildcats and Coach Larry Weems! You guys were great and made things happen. I hate that the other side called three timeouts in a row to play with the mind of our kicker. But that's all right/ This is a TEAM sport and our TEAM beat theirs. Yay!!!!
